EVEN IF HE DOESN’T

In writing this chapter, I feel it’s important to prepare you for the alternative. Just because you let go and let God doesn’t mean you’ll suddenly have everything you’ve ever prayed for or at the time you specifically asked for it. I don’t want my story of God showing up with a first-round NFL Draft pick to give you a false sense of reality. That year could have easily gone the other way, and I could have signed no players.

What happens when God doesn’t answer our prayers as we think he should? Or doesn’t do it on our desired timeline?

Meet Taylor Moore: attorney by day, wife, podcaster, life coach, and women’s spiritual leader by night. I met Taylor while working at my law firm and was immediately enamored by her love for people and her true faith in God. Taylor is the epitome of “let go and let God.”

Taylor and her husband had been trying to get pregnant for two years. Have you ever met someone and just knew she was meant to be a mom? I mean this in the most respectful and complimentary way: Taylor is one of those women. She has supermom written all over her. (You read her bio above, right?)

I was privy to Taylor’s pregnancy journey and was believing and praying that God would bless her with a child. One night, Taylor came to my house for our weekly TV night (Little Fires Everywhere—can we say “best show ever”?). While hanging out, she updated me that, unfortunately, she still wasn’t pregnant. When you’re friends with someone who’s trying to get pregnant, you join her on the emotional roller coaster. At that point, I was fully invested in Taylor’s journey and felt crushed when the news was anything but positive.

Taylor then told me she felt God was pushing her to publicly share her journey of trying to get pregnant. As many of you are aware, thousands of women struggle to conceive, and Taylor felt committed to sharing her story to encourage other women and couples walking the same path. I knew this wasn’t an easy decision for Taylor because she had no idea what the outcome would be. Think about it: usually we get the testimony from someone after receiving the blessing. It’s less common for someone to be so vulnerable and transparent and take us along on the journey through the storm.

Taylor’s words to me were: “It’s hard, because I don’t know what is going to happen. I can pray for a child, but I have no idea what God’s will is for me in this situation. But I still believe I have to share this, and whatever God has for me in whatever timing, I will be grateful.”

When Taylor said this, the first thought that came to mind for me was the story of the fiery furnace, in the Book of Daniel in the Bible. This well-known story relates to faith and trusting in God. It takes place when King Nebuchadnezzar was the ruler of the Babylonian empire.
